The one child policy is the population control policy in the People's Republic of China. Stated below are some of the negative/positive impacts of this policy.
Negative impacts :
- children become spolit as parents will dote on their only child a lot, resulting in children being unable to learn to be independent
- ageing population
- large numbers of female babies end up homeless or in orphanages, and in some cases killed due to a traditional preference for boys. in 2000, it was reported that 90 per cent of foetuses aborted in China were female
- fewer people of working age to support the elderly
Positive impacts :
- decreased strain on natural resources
- less overcrowding
I feel that this policy has its pros and cons. However to me, there are more cons and hence i do not feel this policy should be implemented. Firstly, children born in China would be under a lot of pressure as when they grow up, they would have to each earn enough money for their families. They might be the sole breadwinner as their parents/grandparents might have retired. Secondly, female babies are unwanted and these babies would be abandoned or even aborted before birth. Lives are lost just because of this policy. Also, there would be a huge gender imbalance. Thus i feel that China should not adopt this policy.
