One Child Policy
The family structure of China is that for most families, there is only one child that could be born. Only families who have special cases, for example if the first child is disabled, are allowed to have a second child. This is to control the population in China, to avoid the scenario of having too many people in China. Let us see the possible effects it has on the Chinese Society.
Positive effects:
- there is not too many people in China as the birth rate is being controlled, so there are enough jobs for people to take on to work and earn money for their family.
- there is a reduction in the risks of death and injury associated with pregnancy of women
- the family is small and so, the parents only have to focus on one child and the child would receive more care and grow better
- the parents can save more money for future use as only one child to feed does not require a lot of money, compared to having many children
- there would not be a case whereby there are not enough schools to educate children
Negative effects:
- if a girl is born, the family's surname would not be carried on to the next generation
- boys can do more for families who farm and if a girl is born, the family's income and food production would be affected
- there might be an imbalance in the number of boys and girls born
