One Child Policy -- Jing Xue (29)

The one-child policy, officially the family planning policy, is the population control policy of the People's Republic of China. Each family in China is only allowed to have one child, except for some exceptions listed below:

Exceptions:
-Rural families may have a second child if the first child is a girl
-Rural families may also have a second child is the child is disabled
-Ethnic minorities are exempt from this policy
-Families in which neither parent has siblings are also allowed to have two children.
-Foreigners living in China and residents of the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau are also exempt from the policy.

Well, every policy has its POSITIVE and NEGATIVE outputs. Let's view the POSITIVE effects of the one child policy first.

Positive Impacts:
-The policy reduces the population size in China, which is a good things because it gives less strain to the government's resources, less overcrowding and less pollution.
-It stablizes the world's population, because China houses nearly 20% of the world's population.
-Enough job opportunities for the citizens in China, as there is less competition.

Now, the negative impacts:

Negative Impacts:
-''4-2-1'' syndrome:
=a single child have to single-handedly look after 2 parents and 4 grandparents when they become adults, making it a tough job
-Ageing population
-Male to female ratio will be much higher
=males are the preferred gender over females as they can pass on their family surnames. Hence, there        will be much more males than females in China, which can lead to:
-More abandoned female babies and abortion of female babies.
Furthermore, it can cause psychological effects on abandoned babies.

My Personal Opinion:
I feel that the one child policy should not be carried out, especially in China. Generally. Chinese preferred males over females because they carry their family names. Hence, when a female baby is born, it is likely that it would be abandoned or killed because the family wants a baby boy. This is unfair and being prejudiced towards the females, and in the future, females may be treated unequally, because they are disliked. The chinese government should not risk the many lives of female babies to save theor resources, because this is considered, to me, a rather selfish act. They should at least find a way to gather more resources, and this shouldn't be a difficult task considering China being economically superior. I believe that the government can implement another better policy to solve the problem of growing population. Maybe they can implement laws to fine those who abort, killed, or abandoned their babies on purpose.
Therefore, I think that the one child policy is not necessary, although it has its own positive effects, like stablizing the population.
